Pilkington, 40ft a National Historic Vessel, rigged as a Gaff Yawl and resides in France. She is the last known of the Southport Prawners. Built on a beach in 1900, by the Wright & Sons, as trade for prawns declined so the vessels that were built were sold off or converted into yachts. Pilkington was used for fishing along the North West Coast of the UK. North Wales / Liverpool. and was raced in with the Fleet of Nobbies and Prawners.
Her last survey was in 2014, she is in fine fettle. New Bukh engine installed 2017.
Her sails are "As new" condition. Her accommodation has been lovingly restored, in keeping to the early 20ieth century.using original furniture, fixtures and fittings, it provides a step back in time to the Victorian/ Edwardian periods.
With her relatively shallow draft and the masts in tabernacles. She could be utilised on the inland waterways of Europe.
It is noted that auxiliary power was first installed in 1920. Then had the wheelhouse added to her in the 1950's when out of trade she was converted for pleasure cruising, converted to an easier rig as a yawl. She is easily sailed and found to be a good safe boat. 1980's, she was restored and rebuilt as a yacht by Fred Turner to her original standards. Hence why she is still with us today in such fine form.
Presently she resides on the water in Cherbourg, France.
